Crap
I wish that I could think of something about this movie that warrants its classic status, but it's just a sh*tty-looking, self-important, piece of delusional crap about two criminal stoners cobbled together by two moderately talented - at best - celebrity stoners. This was one of the films I was introduced to in film school (along with the preachy, bullsh*t special features) and certainly makes the list of ones for which I'd like my time refunded.
Easy Rider features Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper) as they decide to break from the evil capitalistic society and become bums that make enough money on a big drug deal to keep themselves in drugs and motorcycle wh*res as they go on a pointless road trip. They get detoured by the aforementioned drugs and biker sluts as they do nothing, mean nothing, and are nothing. At the end of the movie, as they ride off into the sunset, some hillbillies ride up in a pickup and blow them away with a shotgun. No, seriously.
In what was supposed to be a great big poke at how money is "f*cking the American flag" (check your history about how we became a country, dipsh*t), the standard bearers are a pair of no direction losers. Not surprisingly, Hopper and Fonda were accused at the time of running about with cameras shooting whatever while high on the film's budget. I think the final product illustrates this rather effectively, but for some reason a retarded audience just needed to believe in anything negative about America and decided this piece of crap would fit the bill. I wouldn't even say the movie is liberal; similar to movies like Set It Off (which posits that it's okay to kill cops if you've had enough bad experiences with them) Easy Rider makes sweeping claims after the fact that the film itself simply does not justify nor support.
This is one of those rare movies where the filmmakers (Hopper directed) slapped together something that turned out to be financially successful or gained cult classic status and followed it up with all this deep meaning in what is clearly a hollow joy ride of a film.
What a waste of celluloid.

| I had the same experience, my womans dad hyped this movie up to me telling me that it was one of the greatest films ever made and blah blah blah.....now he is a biker and he lived the lifestyle of the main characters for many years....so to him maybe it is. When I sat down and watched it I was in shock waiting for the good parts to happen which never came. |

| This wasnt crap. This an america classic. Sure maybe in today's standards it would be especially the lackluster that is "Wild Hogs" but when this movie came out it was what it was. A good movie about bikers. |
