Living Classic
Favorite Movie Quote: "Now get the hell down in the cellar. You can be the boss down there, but I'm boss up here!"
The first time I saw Night of the Living Dead I was around 14 years old and I caught it one Saturday night on television. Surprisingly I watched it even though it is the only black and white movie I actually sat through up until that point. I immediately loved the film and it educated me to help me figure out what my favorite horror genre was..........Zombies.
Even though they are not called "Zombies" in the film, the movie centers around an outbreak of "ghoul" like creatures that are deceased humans that have been re-animated back to life. Now these ghouls are not seeking money, sex, or fame they want simply one thing.....to feed........on humans. So The plot takes you following this basket case named Barbara which happened to be visiting her dead mother at a graveyard on the very day this outbreak occurs........Yea could you have any worse luck? So zombies kill her brother and she runs to a nearby farmhouse which has a few people inside holding up there as well.
She meets Ben, the hero of the movie who ultimately takes charge of the situation and becomes the leader. Inside the house arguments and disagreements erupt causing friction between the victims. So not only do they have to worry about the creatures outside but trust amongst themselves is dwindling down very fast. 95% of the film takes place inside this farm house and the director George Romero does a brilliant job of keeping the film interesting.
I have heard older people say that this film scarred the sh*t out of them, but it never really scared me.....kind of the same thing with the shower scene in Psycho.....it was said to have made people throw up in the theatre and now you can see worse acts of violence in commercials. I do not think zombies that you could walk past without them catching you is scary but I think the stress and drama of the people experiencing the ordeal is what made this film great. I have actually sat around with my friends before and talked out in detail what I would do if an outbreak ever occurred in real life, and yes I am very proud of that because I would survive.

Is it off topic to mention how much I really want to see Hot Fuzz? I think zombies, I think Shaun of the Dead, I think Hot Fuzz.
I should go lay down. |
