Movie Review by Jamie

Jane Fonda can do comedy!

I just saw this film last night, and it seems that this film was just recently reviewed (and quite well) by another member. My comment for her was sounding suspiciously like another review, so here we are....

I couldn't agree more that Jane Fonda was great from beginning to end. Of course, you can hardly go wrong when the writer is Neil Simon, but it doesn't change the fact that Fonda seems to have a knack for comedy. I wish she would have explored this style of acting more throughout her career.

However, if it's the Jane Fonda show, Mildred Natwick comes close to stealing it away from her. In a role worthy of an Oscar nomination as Fonda's mother, she gave quite the colorful performance. The same holds true for Charles Boyer as the mysterious man who lives in the attic, as well as the rest of the supporting cast.

I wasn't so sure about Robert Redford, although he was serviceable playing the "stuffed shirt" part. It made realize how great Jack Lemmon handles Simon's characters. However, the last 15 minutes was probably among my favorite Redford scenes of all time, and I'm not sure that Lemmon or anyone else could have done much better.

As the conflict heats up, Fonda explains to Redford that there are watchers and there are doers. If that applies to movies, in terms of entertainment, this film is unarguably a doer.

I absolutely agree about Redford shining at the end of the film. Until that moment, he is incredibly frustrating, and then he is amazing. This is no 'The Apartment', but it is still entertaining.

This is such a great classic. But would this movie really be the same if Redford acted different. I think it was meant for him to be a stuffed shirt and Fonda to be so outgoing. You may be surprised how many out going people marry stuffy people.
