WHO KNOWS WHAT GOES ON BEHIND CLOSED DOORS?
Everyone hates to repeat gossip, but what else is there to do with it?
You know, the trouble with gossip is that so much of it is true.
Pssst..... Do you wanna hear a secret?
Prattle. Rattle. Tittle-Tattle.
Ah! The Sweet Seduction of a Soap Opera Lifestyle in Smalltown, USA.
Carnal lust, sexual repression, illegitimacy, incest, rape, intolerance, class snobbery, white-trash - Upon its initial release back in 1957, the subject matter portrayed in PEYTON PLACE's story was actually considered to be highly-controversial.
Adapted for the screen from the equally controversial 'landmark' novel of the same name (written by GRACE METALIOUS), PEYTON PLACE turned out to be a massively popular box-office success like no other. This ultra-melodramatic Soap Opera of Herculean proportions broke all kinds of attendance records at movie theaters all across the USA, and beyond.
PEYTON PLACE cleverly tempted moviegoers with the expectation of propriety and scandal. Curiosity got the best of everyone, and they literally flocked to the theaters in droves.
To drive their insatiable point even further home - The filmmakers of PEYTON PLACE imaginatively crammed every gossipy degradation imaginable under the sun into its 157 minute running time. Due to movie-censorship back in the 50's, the film's end results were less explicit than that of the novel, but, all the same, PEYTON PLACE caused quite a little stir upon its release.
PEYTON PLACE quite blatantly exposed the post-war cynicism that lurked quietly beneath the genteel facade of the 1950's lifestyle. Even though the film's suggestiveness has become passe over the years it has retained its own kitschy sort of charm.
PEYTON PLACE and its TV spin-off spawned a decade's worth of similar Soap-Opera type films that have kept the movie-audience enthralled for hours on end, always coming back for more.
