DON'T OPEN THE BOX!!
Favorite Movie Quote: "Woman is the incomplete-sex. It takes a man to make her complete."
Of course, everyone's familiar with the ominous meaning behind the term - THE MANHATTAN PROJECT. We all know the devastating implications that it had on everyone, and everything, across the entire face of this planet. But, if you're not sure, I'll clue you in. THE MANHATTAN PROJECT was the code name used back in 1942 for the American Project. This entailed a Top-Secret, U.S. Government project which specifically focussed all its energies on the developement of the Atomic Bomb....KA-BOOM!!
It's hard to grasp, at first, that KISS ME DEADLY is, indeed, a story that actually ties itself in with certain sinister dealings behind Nuclear Testing, which were still being carried out, at full-throttle, in the 1950's.
Anyways......Welcome To The Nuclear Age.
KISS ME DEADLY is an exceptionally gripping adaptation of MICKEY SPILLANE's famous novel of the same name. It's brutal, surreal, gritty and intelligent. In fact, it's everything you'd expect, and get, from SPILLANE's hard-edged, graphically violent story.
KISS ME DEADLY stars RALPH MEEKER as Mike Hammer, a hard-boiled, one-dimensional, Private-Eye doing his investigating-thing on the shady side of town, cruising along the streets of San Francisco. MEEKER is superb as the rugged, callous, womanizer named Mike Hammer. I don't think I've ever seen another actor portray shallowness and brutality so brilliantly as MEEKER does in his character as Hammer. His performance is truly a splendid display of refined apathy and cynicism that goes far beyond compare.......Bravo, RALPH MEEKER!!
"I don't care what you do to me, Mike....Just do it, fast!", squeals Velda.
KISS ME DEADLY's story unfolds one hot, summer night on the outskirts of town.
While cruising along the open high-way, at break-neck speed, Mike Hammer suddenly steers his cherished convertible into a massive skid, nearly losing total control. Hammer's wheels screech, like pure pain, along the dark pavement as he attempts to avoid hittting a young woman dressed only in an over-sized trench-coat, standing right in the middle of the road, frantically trying to wave someone down for help.
Mike's all too brief encounter with this rather peculiar woman named Christina, and his attempts to help her, ultimately lead him straight into one of the most bizarre and perplexing adventures that this no-nonsense P.I. has ever, ever experienced. Ruthless thugs soon drive Mike off the road and beat him senseless."Remember me!", Christina screams out before she is savagely murdered. Hammer must find some answers. He retaliates to this unfounded violence the only way he can, by hitting out first, then asking questions later.
Cutting a brutal path through the city's sleazy underside, Mike Hammer soon uncovers a mysterious, black container whose extremely deadly contents not only solves Christina's murder, but triggers a horrifying, apocalyptic climax that is a visual stunner in its execution. Pandora's Box has now been opened, unleashing a virtual 'Hell-On-Earth' Doomsday that man can neither stop, nor control.
KISS ME DEADLY is deadly-good entertainment! Absolutely!!
Filmed in black and white, KISS ME DEADLY was directed by ROBERT ALDRICH, whose other notable films include THE DIRTY DOZEN and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?
