"Guys and Dolls" is one of my all-time favorite musicals.
The story centers around two couples: Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown, and Nathan Detroit and Adelaide. Nathan and Adelaide have been engaged for several years (Adelaide's even written to her mother that they're already married to avoid disgracing her family). Nathan is a gambler who runs the "oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York". Adelaide is the lead entertainer at The Hot Box. Sky Masterson is a career gambler who always wins and strikes big. Sarah Brown is a part of the Salvation Army, determined to win souls for heaven. And of course, there's more than just that going on.
The songs in this musical are classics. "Luck Be A Lady", "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat", "Guys and Dolls", "Adelaide's Lament", "Take Back Your Mink", "Sue Me". You'll find yourself singing right along. However, there are some stinkers. "If I were a Bell" is one of the worst songs in a musical, and Jean Simmons's voice doesn't help it one bit. Also, my biggest complaint with this movie is the "Pet Me Papa" song. What was wrong with "A Bushel and A Peck" (the song from the musical)? I love "A Bushel and A Peck" and have been singing it to my kids since they were babies. It's a far better song than "Pet Me Papa". That song is...embarrassing.
With the exception of Jean Simmons's singing voice, the cast is superb. Who doesn't love a young Marlon Brando, let alone a crooning Marlon Brando? He's dead sexy in "Guys and Dolls". Frank Sinatra is at his best. Stubby Kaye lends the perfect comedic sidekick.
There's a reason why "Guys and Dolls" is a classic folks. If you're a fan of musicals or "old Hollywood", it's a must-see.
