Movie Review by Lisa
March 19th, 2007

For me this is Akira Kurasawa's best work, nominated for 2 Oscars this movie helped introduce Asian film to a Western audience.

I was first told to watch this movie 6 years ago when I began training in Kendo (Japanese fencing) it was somewhat compulsory in my club to familiarize one's self with the classic samurai movies.

A small village, which is under regular attack from bandits, seeks the aid of samurai to help protect their village, however they have very little money. They eventually they find some ronin samurai who are down on their luck and agree to help them.

The most memorable role goes to Toshiro Mifune who plays an unlikely samurai who claims samurai lineage but carries a sword that is much to long for him which he struggles to draw, Mifune provides great comic relief.

This is a long movie but if your a fan of Kurasawa or foriegn film its a must.

This was always one of my mom's favorites. We've watched it several times over the years and it doesn't get old.
