Movie Review by Zara

Jane Powell is a leftie

My grandmother used to force me to watch old movies. I think she laid this one out on me when I was in junior high school. I remembered thinking that there wasn't all that much to offer from older movies. After all, it's not like they had the clarity or the special effects that current movies did. (I laugh thinking about that since we're talking late eighties when I thought that.)

I absolutely adore this movie. It's sweet and old fashioned, with a mountain man coming down to do business in town and looking to find a woman who would be ready to marry him by the end of the day. Jane Powell is strong-willed and tough, something that he thinks would survive up there. What he fails to tell her is that he lives with his six other brothers and he needs her to help take care of their home.

She spends time making them learn manners and clean up their act, then they call get to go to the famous barn raising scene. When I thought that older movies didn't have enough color to them, I was sorely wrong when it comes to this movie. It's gorgeous, with all of the brothers wearing brightly colored shirts that match the colors of the dresses of the women that they will end up with.

I especially loved the scene where they go into town and abduct all of the women, hoping to make them their wives. The meowing by Russ Tamblyn to get his girl to come out is my favorite.

I think there's a reason why the musicals began to die out. People got tougher and less attuned to the sweet nature of a musical. I kind of feel sorry that that happened. It's a shame.

this too...is one of my favorites since i was a little girl. the soundtrack is amazing, sweet and clever. and the boys were all so handsome, even if they were rough around the edges... they all had hearts of gold...

this movie made me want to have 26 children and to give them all bible names... thank god i grew out of that! and thank god jane powell settled on "Hannah" instead of "hagar" or "hepsebah" (sp?)
