Movie Review by Martin
June 28th, 2010

"The Collector" is a strange film for me, in that I went into the cinema thinking it would be a cheap "Saw" rip-off, only to find it start of very promising, later discovering it slowly going down the exact road I thought it was going to at first.

A burgeler breaks into a seriously big family home only to find himself in the middle of a (as I wrote before) "Saw" like house of torture. The first half hour of the film is great, as the main characters back story is explored, before he breaks into the said house, sneaking around, only to discover there is someone else worse in there doing the same. Some mad killer who's taken the family of the home hostage. These dark, creepy early moments are suspenseful, and I was on the edge of my seat, so why the mediocre rating I hear you ask?

Well, soon the film starts doing everything I hate a horror movie doing. It goes from eerie and dark to snuff movie with its over the top violence. I suppose this should of been expected since some guy behind one of the "Saw" sequels was behind this but come on, couldn't he have done something a bit different with this clone? Besides the different opening of this "The Collector's" basicly another "Saw" sequel (and I haven't even bothered seeing most of those).

OK, so there are are plenty of creepy moments in this, but they're hidden amongst all the over the top blood and guts and un-originality of the rest of the thing. Also the lead actor is kind off crap, and the ending predictable and sloppy, forgetting all about concluding the stuff set up at the beginning of the movie in favour of a not-to-surprising twist.

Deeply average to me then this, though most horror fans (who love all that blood-splatting stuff over genuine creepiness) will probably enjoy it more than I did.
