The main reason why I am docking this movie from something of utter greatness to just below it is that I can't stand Breslin and I wish the movie could have kept up with showing the rules that it starts off with so wonderfully funnily with.
I really, sincerely hope that Woody Harrelson gets an Oscar nomination for his funny redneck, zombie ass kicker performance and that's not even a joke. If Kevin Klein can get one for A FISH CALLED WANDA, why not Woody? He is everything here from strong to funny to even sentimental in a way that you're not expecting from a farcical film.
Eisenberg continues to be great, this blank faced kid with a heart of gold, stealing the title from Michael Cera. I like Eisenberg far better than Cera in the long run, as he learns to grab his balls and find his inner hero in a way that George Michael never could. His inflections are still deadpan but have a deeper resonance. You giggle at his set of paranoid rules and it is his voice overs that help guide the movie through even some of the slower parts of the film.
Stone is still great, even if she's not bearing her traditional red locks. On the posters for the film, she does look a lot like Mila Kunis, which is probably why the cast list posted early for the film included the other actress on the credits. Stone has a voice of a different creature, however, and you love her more for it instead of it being something that you have to look past.
And for those who go to see the movie and love the addition of Bill Murray, make sure that you wait out the credits and see the "hidden" clip at the end of the film. Completely worth it.

I'm with yeh on Eisenberg I fell in love with this kid in "Squid and the whale" he's got so much more talent than Cera, although Cera does remind me of a cute fluffy hamster.
I have squeezed this movie into my schedule this week. |
