Movie Review by Andy
February 6th, 2008

Well, I gave Plan 9 one star for being so bad that it was kind of entertaining. Glen or Glenda isn't as entertaining though. It's really, really weird. I would put it on a "creepy" level. You have a sexual identity crisis mixed with Bela Lugosi in scenes that are stylized in the form of a 1930's horror movie.

The movie tells the story of a male cross dresser from a point of view that is very twisted. Glen or Glenda's narrator actually compares people's confusion about cross dressers with people originally doubting cars and airplanes.

I find it hard to believe that Ed Wood was a cross dresser in real life. His handling of a controversial subject has no gentility at all. You would think that with Wood being this subject that the film's approach might be a little more sensitive. It's quite the opposite.

This movie reminds me of Stephen Colbert's book where he tries to explain homosexuality. Colbert's completely wrong and off base, but it's intentional. Colbert's book is supposed to be funny. Glen or Glenda is supposed to be a drama.

I think you have to fault Ed Wood's total lack of filmmaking skills. The one praise I think you can give Wood is that he got his films made. Despite no real support he got his movies done. Whether that was a good thing is debatable.

The thought I kept having while watching this was, how in the hell could anyone think this was a good idea?

Plan 9 from Outer Space had its own goofy charms, but this is absolutely unwatchable. That is why I think this movie is Ed Wood's worst movie. Again, I find it a shame that Bela Lugosi was reduced to making stuff like this in the last years of his career.

Ed Wood's worst movie? This might be the worst movie, period.

It would certainly be a top contender. It is certainly one of the worst I have ever seen. But there are a few others that have been nearly as bad.

I think what might make Ed Wood's movies the kings of bad is the fact they were made to be more. Yeah, there's some bad horror and action movies, but you always feel those movies know they suck.

So, did you think that the character Glen/Glenda was someone that you would like to know in real life??........Didn't you think that Glenda's wardrobe was simply divine?

No and no.
