1001 Movies to see before you die
Favorite Movie Quote: "You're not only wrong. You're wrong at the top of your voice."
A train pulls into a one-horse town for the first time in four years and man walks off that draws attention from everyone in town.
This film has the biggest collection of stars that I have seen in a long time.
Spencer Tracy, who received and Academy Award for his role as the stranger, John J. Macreedy, plays it close to the vest, which has everyone jumping and jumpy as they try to find out who he is.
Lee Marvin finds out that he is not easily intimidated. Walter Brennan muses in a way that seems to indicate that some of the towns folk have reason to be afraid. Ernest Borgnine thinks something needs to be done, but he is not capable of deciding what. Robert Ryan seems to be The Man in town, and gathers his facts before doing anything. The Sheriff (Dean Jagger) may be plastered, but he sure was nervous about something. The first, and only person to help him was Anne Francis.
All they know is that he is looking for a Japanese farmer who allegedly disappeared in 1941. That fact has everyone really worried.
The story has some of the best lines I have ever heard. Millard Kaufman was nominated for an Academy Award for the film. It is also a film that features some of the best directing I have ever seen. Not a moment in this film was wasted. Everything was crucial to the films development. The pace was perfect. John Sturges was the brilliant director in charge.
So, why did this film garner so many nominations without a win? Easy. Ernest Borgnine was in another film that year as the lead, and that film took almost everything. After watching this one, I definitely want to see the one they thought was better.
