Movie Review by Zara
December 24th, 2009

Very funny movie in the vein that most of Mike Judge's comedy comes off. It's very "real." While the characters might do and say things that are over-the-top or perhaps just externalize what most people internalize in life, we're allowed to live vicariously through them, knowing that they're close enough in realism to being just like us (the crew in OFFICE SPACE as well as the working class in this movie) but actually follow through with what we only dream of doing.

That said, while this movie is definitely funny and filled with some great characters (Ben Affleck gets a lot of the praise, but don't forget that Bateman is always fantastic as the "everyman," J.K. Simmons puts in tremendous work as the boss who calls all the employees by derogatory terms rather than learning their names and even the gigolo kid that Bateman hires to seduce his wife is funny, even if he is fairly stupid and hard for most to relate to, and the ALWAYS great Clifton Collins Jr), it's definitely not nearly as memorable as Judge's other hit movies. It's no cult classic like OFFICE SPACE and it's not one of those eye-openers about the decline of Western Civilization like IDIOCRACY.

But it's funny. It's most definitely funny. And these days, that's saying a lot more than most of the drivel that gets released and called "comedy." I'd even venture to admit that I feel Judge is more reliable in delivering the funny than Apatow, even if that's blasphemy.
