Movie Review by Zara May 20th, 2009

There are some good things in this movie and some bad things in this movie. Well, mainly it's the concept of the movie which is bad. And by concept, I mean that late 90's, early 2000's idea that it's automatically going to make for an interesting film if you take a lot of people whom audiences are familiar with (especially the cult fanatics of the Gen X set) and put them in a bunch of wacky roles that you "like, totally wouldn't expect them to be in" and then assume that everything will fall wonderfully into place. It doesn't.
Take out the shock factor of having some familiar face walk in for just about every role in the movie and you might have had something that was more interesting as a whole. A barber gives a haircut to a guy who happens to be a thief who went into business with a wealthy guy to steal some coins but not because the wealthy guy needed money, he just wanted to one-up his social rival. When the thief double-crosses the guy, the guy hires someone to kill him, only the kid is a little too green for the job and botches things up. The gangster does eventually accidentally get killed (supposedly) by the barber who stashes his body at his soon-to-be-ex-wife's apartment, enlists the help of a friend to find the coins, gets the coins, loses the coins in a really silly manner, ends up wanting to kill himself where he crosses paths with the guy who wanted to steal the coins in the first place, ends up saving that guy from his suicide attempt, gets investigated by the cops, one of which is the bodacious Salma Hayek... oh, and there's a drag queen girlfriend to the gangster and a running theme of everyone having a father who's committed suicide.
Following along? Yeah, that's kinda the point. It's one of the movies made during the end of its sub-genre, this hipper-than-thou group of movies which were inspired in the days when Tarantino could do no wrong and everyone wanted to quote old TV commercial jingles and always accidentally killed people.
Because of the people in the movie, it's somewhat interesting. It's also insanely distracting because you keep thinking of them as the actors instead of as the characters. The story is quirky, but quirky only gets you so far in life. It's an OK movie that will either mildly entertain you or majorly irritate you, depending on your personal preferences.
