Movie Review by Tim
December 20th, 2009

A nice surprise....long...but nice!

Favorite Movie Quote: "So I'm guessing your friend is the fat version of you."

I went into Funny People thinking that I was about to waste 2 hours of my time. I was wrong on several ends. First if indeed it did turn out to be a waste of time it wasn't going to be 2 hours but more like 3 hours as this movie is long as hell...probably its biggest downfall. Second this film turned out to be a really great movie filled with comedy, drama and some great characters.

I love most of Judd Apatow's stuff. I love the dirty jokes and twisted sense of humor. Sandler usually hits pretty well with me but he has done some utter garbage and followed in the same steps as Jim Carrey, switching his career from comedies to more dramatic roles after he already made enough money that it didn't matter if he ruined his movie career.

What I like about this film is that it shows what its like to be a struggling comedian. This is something that I care about because its not easy to get in front of people and tell jokes that may make people laugh or may get you booed off the stage. Most comedic work is done for free until you get some sort of following and that is not an easy achievement either.

I love stories that take someone famous or an expert at something and they decide to take an amateur under their wing and give them that chance that many work so hard their whole life to never achieve. It is interesting to me that a huge celebrity like Sandler's character would do something like that and it just makes me ponder how cool it would be to be the nobody. Kind of like when Apollo Creed gives the underdog Rocky a chance at the champion, its almost like winning the lottery without winning money.

The film was filled with the typical Jonah Hill and Seth Green sex jokes that just never seem to get old. Eric Bana really surprised me, I always have liked him but never really new he could be this funny. When he is commentating the sports game on TV for Sandler I couldn't stop laughing.

What I don't like about the film is two things. The length is a little much....I can watch the 3 hour extended edition of Lord Of The Rings no problem but watching a comedy / drama for that long really doesn't work. I didn't get bored with it but it just felt as if it should be ending and it didn't...time and time again. I also think they just carried the whole ex-girlfriend angle a little too much and it started side tracking what the film was really about. They could have touched on it some but making it be the entire plot of the second half I feel was a mistake.

Anyway I will watch it again...
