Modern Day Gangster Flick
Favorite Movie Quote: "I'm John Dillinger, I Rob Banks"
I love long movies but you could see during this movie there are many moments where they could have edited out some scenes. Yes I know how important it is to always have a love scene or two in a movie but it always slows the action, the story and the plot down, even though you do care about the relationship between Dillinger and Billie.
As for the rest of the film I loved the movie but I do not like Christian Bale, he is Batman, he still has that weird voice of his from Batman and he always seems to try too hard as he did in the movie 'Terminator Salvation' and this movie; I was not convinced of him playing G Man Melvin Purvis but that is just me.
The movie sells itself with the outstanding cast and support cast; marion cotillard is a gem as always as she was in La Vie En Rose, she does another great performance here playing mr. depp's girl friend; Mr. Depp is mysterious, sexy, intelligent, witty and mysterious as usual; I barely recognized Stephen Dorff in the movie; Billy Crudup plays a creepy J. Edgar Hoover in eerie fashion, each time that he is on screen I get an uneasy feeling just as I still do when I read something about the real J. Edgar Hoover; Lilli Taylor does a good job as the stern, serious no holds barred warden; make sure you see this movie with a good sound system due to the shoot outs, there are quite a few here, and for you squeamish people remember this is a gangster movie so the gore is way up the gore scale.
With school being out a few parents did bring some children with them, this I do not recommend due to the subject matter of the film, especially with gangs nowadays so prevalent in our cities, but that is a parent's call whether to take them or not to take them.
The movie is 2 1/2 hours long so eat beforehand and sip slowly because it is a long movie but it does flow smoothly; great music from the 30s used especially of the late billie holiday, so go see this movie but don't expect great things and a movie of epic proportions but it is a good movie and that is why I gave it 3.5 stars.
