Movie Review by Zara
June 20th, 2009

There really isn't anything that you get to watch in this movie that you haven't already gotten the gist of from the trailer, so if you can convince your kid to hold off on seeing it in the theater, just promise them that you'll rent it for them when it comes out on DVD and you can stick them in front of the TV and disappear for a couple of hours.

Look, as parents, we're really not divided into "perfect" and "sh*tty" bins. Most parents out there are pretty damn average. We pay good enough attention to our children to love them and understand what is going on in their lives and the very fact that while Murphy's character is heavily influenced by his work, you can't avoid the obvious: he's keeping a civil relationship with his child's mother, he's regularly having unsupervised visitations, he's aware of her personal life to the extent that the school involves him when there's a problem.

So my biggest gripe with this movie is that it attempts to paint him as a sh*tty parent throughout most of it. Sure, we can all laugh at Church as he pretends to be Native American, but he's the father who ignores his child more. He's the sh*tty parent. I feel offended that this movie suggests that in order to be in the only other category they think exists, Murphy must go to extreme limits to prove himself.

The little girl in the movie is adorable, which helps ease a lot of the pain that goes on. I would have rated this lower as a regular review, but I'm taking into account the possible potential that it has as a movie for children. It's alright, as far as those 6+ years up are concerned. Most have dealt with far more dire family situations than those that the young girl has to endure. Like the designer clothes, the private school, the perfect mother, the abundantly overpriced homes and bedrooms she has. I think kids should watch it to have a laugh and think to themselves, "Oh, she thinks she has it rough, does she?"
