Movie Review by Martin
August 6th, 2009

Everything about this film was a winner from the get go. It stars the legend that is Denzel Washington, and John Travolta as a bad guy which is always awesome, as well as being directed by Tony Scott, whos films most of which, i have loved!

This is another one i love! The story is one that could go either way in which you believe the badguy could possibly win, as he is made sort of likeable and the good guys are hardly squeeky clean. There is so much tension in this movie with Travolta threatening his train full of hostages as you sit unsure whether he will actually be evil enough to pull that trigger or not.

It realy is Travolta that steals the show from under Washingtons feet in this as a classic badguy who is also worringly charming for someone ready to cap whoever gets in his way and uses the phrase "mother f*cker" alot! But Washington is also his usual best as a misunderstood character thrown into a situation out of his control at the totally wrong time in his life. The entire cast is crazily good, with a deadly serious John Turturro and charismatic James Gandolfini also along for the ride.

For a film that could of been just 2 guys talking over a radio for 2 hours, there is never a dull moment as a "24" style realtime approach is attempted, backstorys are explored, mistakes are made, and Travolta looses his temper and shouts. Alot!

Any fault in the film lies with maybe the addition of a laptop that one of the passengers has and none of the terrorists seems to notise (probably added to differ the film from the 70's origanal on which its based a bit), and maybe Scotts usual obsesion with slow motion weighing things down a tad. But the movies so obsorbing these things don't realy make a dent in its well deserved high rating!

My mate who i went to see this with ushually hates everything but loves this too so go see it you fool!
