'Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen' is what we all expected from a sequel, bigger, louder and longer, all the ingredients that we seem to want in a sequel. We definitely want more action, more boom and more plot, not to mention character, but a follow up to Transformers like this seems to be a lttle to much. Director Micheal Bay did the same thing when he decided to do a sequel to his 90's hit Bad Boys. Years after the original film's release he brought together some of the original cast (Martin Lawrence and Will Smith) and made a film that was hugely offensive, overlong and just was to much for one film. It surely was a delight to see a Transformers sequel though, the first one delivered enough fun for me to enjoy this a little bit, but it was mostly drug down by what Micheal Bay thought would make the fans of the toys a little prouder.
Sam Witwicky (Shia Lebouf) is back, he is out of high school and ready to take on the College life, though the love of his life Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) is completely uncomfortable with the fact that he's leaving, she understands that they will try and stay together and that she must give him room to live his life. Bumblebee is still with Sam, though Sam is trying to get him to understand that he cannot bring him to College, that he must get back together with the Autobots. When Sam finds out that he still has a piece of the Cube though, he begins seeing mysterious symbols in his head in which he draws and scratches out in areas, like his body is being taken under control. From then on, the war wages again.
So to see Sam and Mikaela actually together as a couple in this film is great, they really had a thing for eachother in the original and now they finally have their chance. Bay tries to create more character by having this relationship being a conflict between the fact that Mikaela's father is out of prison and Sam is going to college, which is far away. There's also this other problem where Mikaela wants Sam to say "the L word" but he constantly makes an excuse. Shia Lebouf has grown alot since his Disney days, he has facial hair and his voice deepened, but from Transformers to this sequel, he seems to be a bit uninterested in the project. He still attempts to show a more emotional side through some of those elements in this film, but he still can't display any real attempt to make Sam something more then a character.
Megan Fox is sexy, straight up I will say this, but her acting career may fall short after this film. Even in the first movie, she feels like nothing more than a good looking woman, it seems like she's used mainly to show skin, which is probably true. The first time we see her we get her half naked, leaning over a chopper fixing it, is that necessary? Kind of, but it's also necessary to have her act, and not just try the entire time. Major Lennox and Sargeant Epps both return, (Played by Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson) and they have a bit of a larger part here since the Military is used alot more here then in the predecessor. They both are good, nothing to special but enough to be pretty noticeable. It's great to see John Turturro back though, playing as Agent Simmons, who was part of Sector 7.
He talks so fast and has this amazing sense of humor which he displays heavily through his character. He is also seen alot more in here than the original, his part is more important and is definitely used more for humor purposes than anything else. Now, besides the very long cast, the film got alot of attention for the long and tense action scenes. Micheal Bay shines only when it comes to crashing cars or exploding buildings, but now he's seen as a guy who can make robot's fight. There is so much more action here than in the original, but thats what I expect in a sequel, everything to be taken to new heights. I must admit that the action is dazzling and the effects are terrific, but once you see robot's fight 4 times, it gets a little bland and boring.
Which happens when the film has been on for 2 hours and we've already seen about 5 or 6 giant fights, and there's still thirty minutes left of the film. Most of the fights are in the desert, so there is nothing more then flying sand and the sound of clashing metal. Another aspect that brings down the rating for the film is the dragged out portion of it all, it's pretty boring. A film with this much action is almost impossible to bore, but there's just no variation to any of the fight scenes. There is some humor, most of it sick and overused, something little kids may laugh at but nothing for adult's. So, it's kind of hard to talk trash on a Transformer's movie, but it's full of action and has plenty of explosions, so it's just kind of average. Most likely I'll find more trash to talk about when I see the film again. But until then, this is pretty average.
