Crank 2: High Voltage (2009)

Movie Review by Martin November 7th, 2009

"Crank 2" is pretty much the most insain thing i've ever seen, but not in a good way. Not that i remember much about the origanal, but what i do is that it was a stupid but fun hour and a half or so. This sequal is taking what the origanal did to the extreme, and its too much.
The tagline for the movie "He was dead, but got better" sums the whole dumb thing up in one. A previously deceased Jason Statham, is given an artificial heart and must pump it with "High voltage" in order to keep living, despite his death in the origanal "Crank," being thrown out of a plane and smashed of a car. This would surely break every bone in your body and destroy every orgin inside of you, never mind kill you!?! Despite this, Statham seems able to run around uninjured, zapping himself with electricty every now and again to keep going, totally indestructable to the dangers that continue to surround him like some sort of superman.
The fact that they even tried to put this film together at all is unbelievable, but what makes it all worse is its continuing obsession with sex, violence and the word "c*nt!". Cut all of that out and there is very little movie here. Anyone want to see some poor sap getting tortured and getting his elbow chopped off? or see some badguys henchman cut of his own nipples to please his boss? I sure as hell didn't!
For a sequal, it also does the worse possible thing a sequal can do, and thats refer to the first movie way to often, with uncalled for flashbacks and recurring un-needed characters, when it should be trying to be and do its own thing. If i wanted reminded of the first movie i would watch it again. One thing i do remember about the origanal was the public sex scene with Amy Smart (nice!) which has been replicated here as if it was the best part of the last movie, so good, exactly the same thing needed to be done again. What?
This ones slight saving grace is that it isn't taking itself to seriously and has some moments that are funny (The kid who plays a young Statham in one of the many flashbacks is spot on genious!). But this film would'nt have got past its pitch if it had'nt been intended as a pisstake from the very beginning, and not all the intended laughs work either. I almost turned off at a fight which turns into an old fastioned "Godzilla" pisstake. This is'nt made up. Its in the movie!
I supose the end of the movie should be unpredictable when compaired to the crazy ending of the first film. Statham being on fire at the end of this one though has got to be some of the worst CGI i've ever seen. Oh and can you believe it? Theres even promise of another "Crank" some day at the VERY end. Who could of seen that one coming?
