Movie Review by Zara June 18th, 2009

This is like a really boring Hamlet. For those who understand that reference, good for you.
I have NOT watched the original version that this movie is based on. Most people on the planet have and I have managed to see clips and bits and pieces of the original when there are Top Ten lists and such, and because it's so popular with horror crowd, I know enough to understand that in the first original, it wasn't Jason who was the killer, it was his mother.
Which is why I thought it was interesting for about a minute that this movie starts off with a semi-flashback looking sequence explaining that the mother is the killer at Camp Crystal Lake, avenging her deformed son's death. But that's about as far as my interest went.
The movie is smooth and polished and has the gleam of an R rated movie of recent times - plenty of nudity from unknown actresses with fake t*ts and the word f*ck thrown around a lot with some updates in technology but not in the common sense of young people.
I guess that's why this movie didn't work for me. Back when the original was made, there were no GPS machines, no cell phones, nothing but luck and hope and spit and while it might have seemed simple minded to go out into the forest to consider what was making the noise, people were more gullible back then and more likely to go looking out of genuine interest.
College aged students these days wouldn't have succumbed to so many killings. Even the stupidest of them would have Twittered that they were being chased by Jason, something to the effect of "Dude.. just found my bro dead. Bailin' on dis joint!"
The movie is relentless in tracking down all of the people in the movie and killing them swiftly, with little fanfare or even very much blood or gore. Most of the killings are simple but lack the powerful punch of lingering on a puddle of blood or a trail of gore. Something... Anything... to make it at least shocking. This movie has none of that.
And Danielle Panabaker is normally an interesting actress (great in MR. BROOKS), so it was even more disappointing that she got pretty much nothing to do in it.
