Gothic tale for teens and adults

Probably this dark fairy tale is not for small kids. It is more like Harry Potter in its darkest moments (which makes it a horror movie then), and like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" craziness in the brightest ones. As a second thought, the most scary things are not visuals but the suspense, so younger children will probably not get those parts. You need to be an adult to be frightened by dolls.

The movie reminded me of a great computer game "American McGee's Alice" (http://tinyurl.com/d6lxqq). Especially the cat! And yes, "Coraline" could end up much more scarier if authors decided to go this way to the end and produce a darker tale for adults. =)

The story itself left me somewhat unsatisfied in the end. I sort of expected some deeper morale besides "be careful what you wish for" and "cleaning up the mess may be hard".

And it feels to me now that this story could be much more complete if it presented less happy ending and darker lesson in the end. But I probably ask too much from a tale. As an entertaining story it is pretty good. I am sure in 3D it looks even better.

Overall I pretty much liked "Caroline" and would watch it again sometimes. Still, do not expect your kid to be too excited about it. Unless he/she listens to gothic doom metal music, that is. =)
