Movie Review by Zara
June 3rd, 2009

As much as there are parts of this movie that grated on my nerves, I think it was because the generalizations are pretty damn true. And that's what sucks about generalizations. Because they're vague, they're easy to get angry over the validity of. But they exist for a reason. Because the same scenario kept popping up enough for people to notice the trend. It's the same when it comes to racial stereotypes. While not all Asians are bad drivers, enough have been so that it's easy to label them as such as a whole. Is it right? No. That's the sucky, "Now I have to explain myself further," part. But they're true enough.

While I haven't read the source material on which this movie was based, I did read Behrendt's sequel he wrote with his wife, "It's Called a Break-up Because It's Broken" and that hit a lot of nails on the head, both from the male and the female perspective. This movie tends to feature more of the male perspective and how women react to it, including the catty little conversations that groups of female friends have when explaining things to one another.

Because I've never been good at maintaining female friendships, there's a lot of me which wants to reject this movie on principle. But over all, I liked it. I liked it quite a bit, especially not noting its running length (just over 2 hours, which means that my fidgety ass has to really be into it in order to not get distracted when viewing at home) during the viewing period.

I myself related most to the Jen Aniston and Ben Affleck characters, two people who had spent 7 childless and happy unmarried years together before she gets pissy when her little sister gets married and decides to finally voice her concern if she's ever going to get the same. She's not a demanding chick or an irrational one. She's the most realistic of the bunch, even if I don't relate to the wanting to get married part. It was the honesty between the two of them in the brief time they're together on screen which was great. Two actors who have had tumultuous relationships in the press in their personal lives, really bringing home the point that it's more about being happy together than being committed by tradition. I'm more of Ben in this regard. I don't need marriage, but if my Jen was OK with me not wanting it even if she really did, then I'd be OK with it. Sounds nutty, but it's what works.

I feel like a stupid girl for liking this movie. I hate that feeling.
