'My Bloody Valentine 3-D' is so far the biggest surprise of 2009, though I deeply regret seeing the film on the big screen, I bought it just to watch it on 3-D in my own living room. This film completely blows away the original, though maybe it's just the 3-D effects that make it better, this is a film that makes horror fans miss the 80's. There is blood, gore, scares, sex, boobs, back stabbing, humor and everything else that made 80's horror so memorable and great. Now-a-days horror seems so over the top and serious, it's hard to enjoy it most of the time. And the decision to go 3-D makes everything alot better, since most of the thrills here are so well done, the "pop out' effect makes it that much better.
Years after an extremely gruesome attack that left Tom Hannigar (Jensen Ackles) scarred with terrible memories, Tom returns home to get rid of his father's mine, where the murders originally took place. The killer that took the lives of 22 people years before, Harry Warden, returns just as Tom does, placing Tom as the main suspect. He's not the suspect just because he returned at the same time Harry did, but because Tom is found where most of the current murders are happening. Tom's ex-girlfriend Sarah (Jaime King) is now married to Axel Palmer (Kerr Smith), who never really liked Tom. Axel is the Sheriff of Harmony, and he will do anything to find Tom guilty of the murders happening in this small town.
The horror genre has placed many faces into the mind's of horror fans. The screamface from Scream, he burnt body of Freddy Krueger, the hockey mask killer of Jason Voorhees, now we have the gas masked Harry Warden, whom is very large in size and really creepy. His weapon of choice is a pickaxe, which miner's use in the mines. Tom is pretty freaked out that Warden has returned back to life to kill again, and many people question him into why he is selling his father's mine. Jensen Ackles plays an important role, and he does it with great percision. I liked watching him act and overall take over the character, he's more then just a bland horror character, he is a very real and menacing character.
Jaime King is a beautiful and talented young actress, imagine almost being murdered by an infamous killer, then years later getting married and having your ex boyfriend return to your hometown, she is put in quite a tricky position. I enjoyed her though, she has a tough female role and plays not just a damsel in destress, but a tough young woman who can hold her own weight. Kerr Smith plays as the local Sheriff, who is now married to Sarah. Axel has this very strong hate for Tom, now that there murder's are occuring again, getting closer to Sarah with each new kill, Axel will do anything to stop this guy. Kerr is a fine actor, he does a good job in the film with his passion to stop Harry Warden and to protect the woman he loves.
Director Patrick Lussier is well known for his editing, which he did for films like the Scream series, Red Eye and New Nightmare. Now that he's in the director's chair though, he knows how to set up a scene and how to shoot it since he has that editor's view point. For a debut film he does a simply amazing job with the film, he never makes the movie boring or un-interesting, and makes the deaths extremely fun and gruesome. This is a horror film so I must talk about the death scenes, each victim being stabbed or torn apart by the brutal pick axe. Though some of the deaths have been done over and over again in horror movies, the 3-D effects make them so much cooler. There is a moment where Warden jumps behind a victim and stabs the pickaxe through his eye, which flies towards the audience, good old fashioned horror fun.
The key moment though is when a jaw is ripped off a victim and flies at the audience, that made me know how much I really loved this movie. If horror director's made more films like 'My Bloody Valentine 3-D', the horror genre would be re-born with interesting films instead of mindless sequels. Overall, this film is extremely fun and extremely cool. It's one of the best 3-D films I have ever seen, a violent homage to the world of 80's horror. This is what we need to see more of.
