Movie Review by Zara
April 19th, 2009

This is that kind of movie which is engineered to win awards. What bugs me about these kinds of movies is that they don't seem to care how good the sum of the product as they are with the value of the parts. Is the acting stellar? Did the director do every move in the book right? How does the art direction look? Good...

The biggest problem with rating a movie like this is that you can really enjoy the acting or the directing or the art direction and yet still be left throwing your hands up in the air with the movie as a whole. I liked the acting. I liked the characters. But overall, this was a story that I couldn't relate to. I haven't had prolonged exposure to organized religion, so I don't understand people who abide by old religious procedures.

While I could appreciate the idea of the movie, that gossip is like stabbing a feather pillow and seeing the results spread far and wide, never to be consumed altogether again, I can't say that this is the kind of film that I would watch over and over again or recommend generically to a friend to watch. If you're an Amy Adams fan, watch it for her. If you're looking for something light weight and entertaining, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a stern drama, this is good if you grew up Catholic. Otherwise, it's mediocre.
