This is actually a good movie. I thought I was going to implode this weekend after not seeing anything all that great. But considering that the movie comes from source material written by the great Elmore Leonard, I should have expected something great.
And the acting is there. Mickey Rourke, who kept feeling as if Hollywood had turned its back on him, has never been better as a man beaten down with age. He is perfect as a Leonard villain - quiet, thoughtful and yet possessing a conscience.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is great in the fact that if you watch enough of his movies, you can appreciate just what an extreme and incredible range he possesses. This is an actor who can be sweet and endearing in some roles, aggressive in others, annoying in this one. By the time that the movie moves into its last 15 minutes, the boyfriend was cheering about what goes on with his character.
But when you take Diane Lane and Thomas Jane as estranged husband and wife and add them as the victims in a plot that they didn't deserve to get tangled up in, you like the movie even more. These are real actors who've honed their skill at being regular people for the screen and they make you feel like it could happen to you.
The movie is well directed, short, clipped and to the point. Much like Leonard's writing, which is pleasing for someone who is familiar with him but might seem a little short handed if you're not a reader.
I definite recommend giving this ignored at the box office movie a chance on DVD.
