An American Carol (2008)

Movie Review by Jarrod
October 4th, 2008

'An American Carol' is a pathetic attempt to ridicule the far-left, but it does not do any favors for the far-right, either, and even while enthusiastically endorsed by Bill O'Reilly, it shows conservatives like him as being stupid, arrogant bullies, who hypocritically criticize others for betraying or trying to stifle constitutional freedoms, while doing precisely the same thing themselves, in addition to tossing around accusations of anti-Americanism and borrowing from a classic Dickens story to show how one radical liberal has a change of heart and learns to love his country.

That liberal is, of course, Michael Moore, or rather, Michael Malone, played by Kevin Farley, the brother of late comedian Chris Farley, but who possesses only a fraction of his talent and goofy infectious charm. Farley does bear a striking physical resemblance to Moore, but misses the mark completely in how he chooses to characterize him. Michael Moore is not an idiot, as this film suggests; his "documentaries" are a lot funnier and smarter than anything we see here, and when he makes fun of and sharply criticizes the Bush administration, his arguments actually have a factual basis, even if they make become polemical rants. Moore's last feature was Sicko, in which he had traveled to Cuba to compare its health care system to that of the United States. He concluded that Cuba's was better, because it was more inclusive and affordable. He never spoke favorably of Fidel Castro, nor did he express any positive sentiment for Communism.

One gripe is that the quality of the health care in Cuba is significantly lower and Castro's policies have led to a brain drain, with doctors and other professionals fleeing the country and migrating elsewhere, hospitals that are understaffed and underfunded, so even if people may not have to pay much (if anything) for medical costs, they may not receive especially good treatment. 'An American Carol' shows Moore/Malone returning from Cuba, working on a new project entitled "Die You American Pigs". While in Cuba, he apparently became friends with Castro, and ignored all of his human rights violations, in an effort to make Cuba look like a better place to live than the US. He bashes America along with Rosie O'Connell (Vicki Browne), an obnoxious loudmouth who maintains that radical Christianity is no worse than radical Islam, much to the disapproval of O'Reilly (playing himself), who dismisses everything she says as nonsense.

Malone is the primary focus, though, and he will be visited by a number of historical figures, who will show him just how great America is, and instill him with pride and patriotism. He is visited by John F. Kennedy (Chriss Anglin), General George S. Patton (Kelsey Grammar), and George Washington (Jon Voight), all of whom are presented as Republicans of one stripe or another (it is hard to say how much Washington would have in common ideologically with modern Republicans, but nonetheless). There are also appearances from Mussolini (Randall Bosley), Hitler (Benton Jennings), and Neville Chamberlain (Oliver Muirhead), and perhaps I am not the only one who thinks there are distinct similarities between certain aspects of conservatism and fascism, but O'Reilly compares liberals to Nazis on occasion, and there are few in the world who are more of a fascist than Ann Coulter.

'An American Carol' is deficient in terms of wit and humor; the performances are shamefully over-the-top, misguided and clueless. Most surprising is that this movie comes from David Zucker, who helmed the best comedies from the 1980s, Airplane and The Naked Gun, brilliant and hilarious spoofs that allowed him and his collaborator Jim Abrahams to replace Mel Brooks as the undisputed kings of parody. Zucker, I am guessing, is not a conservative by nature, but that would hardly matter, given that such a flimsy, poorly conceived attempt to make liberals look like morons would have to be half-hearted, a more passionate conservative would have tried harder. Though this is more or less harmless, I do find it insulting that Moore is typically portrayed as someone who does not care about the troops, and tries to undermine them by not supporting the war in Iraq. Moore does care about and respect the troops, which is why, like other prominent liberals and a few conservatives like Ron Paul, he wants to end the illegal and immoral debacle that repeatedly puts them at risk and has already killed thousands of them, not to mention lots of innocent Iraqis.

The recent vice-presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin also got at this, Palin said that Obama's exit strategy and withdrawal plan would amount to putting up a white flag of surrender, oblivious to the idea that America does not always have to win, and sometimes should not win, depending on the nature of the war we are fighting. We deserved to lose in Vietnam, just as the Soviets deserved to lose in Afghanistan, and I think we should admit that we have lost in Iraq, and have stirred up ethnic and religious tension that will likely result in terrible bloodshed when we do leave. Saddam is out of the picture, which is a good thing, and there has been some democratic progress, more than I expected, but Iraq is ready to fall apart at any moment, with no brutal dictator to hold it together, and much corruption on our part and that of Iraqi politicians. The future is uncertain.

Jarrad... you are exactly why this movie was created. American Carol is the same kinda 'goofy' slapstick humor in movies like 'Airplane,' 'The Naked Gun,'' and 'Scary Movie.' The target audience is the same... and for what it is, it's funny. It may be a little tacky, but gets its point across. This movie has the same type of humor you have enjoyed in the past... you don't see that it's funny because you're so... um... intolerant:)...

You call that a review? I love this quote from you..."America does not always have to win, and sometimes should not win, depending on the nature of the war we are fighting...We deserved to lose in Vietnam...".

That was a war we fought to stop the spread of Communism, the same thing you say Moore isn't trying to do. Your words are traitorous. You should be thankful you live in the U.S. where the government doesn't hang people for speaking their mind...yet! If only we had democrats like FDR these days that would put people like you into concentration camps in Texas until the war is over, with all the other potential enemies of our country.

That's hilarious! You actually defend Moore against claims of being unpatriotic, as if he were anything but unpatriotic. I can understand how you could feel this way though, since you seem to think that surrendering is the patriotic thing to do. What a moron you are.

A close friend of mine actually worked for Moore on all three of his propaganda films and I have more respect for her than you, but then again she does live in NYC, so it's probably not very hard to hate America when you live in such a place. Did we deserve 911 too?

The second dumbest thing you wrote has to be (and it was hard to choose) was "I am not the only one who thinks there are distinct similarities between certain aspects of conservatism and fascism, but O'Reilly compares liberals to Nazis on occasion, and there are few in the world who are more of a fascist than Ann Coulter."

Here's a quick history lesson:

NAZIs are/were Socialists (National Socialist German Workers' Party).

"The National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP) was originally a small party focused on the success of Fascism. When Adolf Hitler joined, and began speaking to large crowds, NSDAP grew."

Fascism, Socialism and Communism are all different levels of the same ideology,
a dictatorial government, higher taxes and less individual freedom, the same thing that liberals like you feel so tingly about. It's idiots like you that want to blame America first for everything and feel guilty for our success. We are the country that ended slavery, it was under a British flag that slaves were brought here. Wake up!

I was just looking for a review, I haven't even seen the movie. The funny thing was, I expected to see a liberal rant from some nut job out there. Thank you for fulfilling my expectations. Hollywood used to be very patriotic, and Senator

Where to begin? Ok, in Vietnam, stop the spread of Communism to where? Ho Chi Minh and his forces successfully ousted the Japanese, the French, and eventually us; we destabilized Cambodia when Nixon secretly ordered the relentless bombing of that country, so we are not blameless for allowing Pol Pot to come to power there. It was the Vietnamese who toppled his murderous regime. We dropped napalm on civilians, burned villages to the ground, supported a dictator in South Vietnam known for corruption and nepotism, whose strong Catholic faith led to the persecution of Buddhists and made enemies of otherwise neutral South Vietnamese citizens. How long did it take us to end slavery? Nearly a century after our independence from Britain; the 13th Amendment, not one of those included in the Bill of Rights. France and England abolished slavery through legislative acts; it took the Civil War to bring us to our senses. In no war should we adopt the behavior or tactics of our enemies. I subscribe the Frederick Douglass form of patriotism; I love this country, but I am willing to condemn it for its sins. America is not always right; sometimes it does bad things for which it must be criticized.

I have just read your review of An American Carol. You have a great deal of knowledge about this movie as well as actors and actresses, as well as of other movies. I bet you see lots of movies. Your review was quite interesting and would like to comment about your last paragraph, which is only my opinion. I am an American citizen and very proud of the U.S.A. When the U.S.A. enters other countries, it is because we, as a nation, have personally been attacked (i.e. Pearl Harbor, 9/11, etc.) or other governments have asked us to help them. Sometimes we enter countries to keep the U.S.A. safe, and that is why we entered Iraq. But in any event, I feel sorry for the fact that throughout your educational life, you were taught by teachers who did not give you history lessons but rather instill in you his or her opinions about our various battles for Freedom and the true meanings of why we entered wars or conflicts. And none of us would be here today without battles and wars. Anyway, I don't think you would want to live anyplace else on earth because the freedoms that you know and share here would end. You would never dare talk against another government because they would put you away for the rest of your life, and only after instilling cruel and inhumane atrocities on you. Anyway, you are entitled to your beliefs, even though they are liberal and I am not. I don't feel you have any patriotism because of your statement "we deserve to lose...". We always have to win because we are the greatest country in the world. I think you should spend some time either in China, or perhaps Africa, or perhaps Cuba, to see what it feels like not to be able to express yourself the way you have in your movie comments. May GOD always bless America and keep us safe.

I do not believe America deserved 9/11, but it should have made us re-evaluate our policies in the Middle East, which provoke hostility, because we do not seem to respect the rights or concerns of the people there. We support Israel uncritically and unconditionally to the detriment of the Palestinians; we are friendly with the Saudi regime, which is as oppressive and corrupt as any in the Arab world. We once supported both Saddam and Bin Laden, when it suited our purposes. Konrad Adenauer once said that Germany deserved to lose WWII because of the way it chose to fight it, and because of what Germany was doing to Jews and other civilians all across Europe. The US has engaged in terrorism itself though it now claims to be fighting it. Iraq posed no threat to us. Saddam was a brutal tyrant, and I am glad he was overthrown, but the human and financial cost of the Iraq War far outweighs the results we are seeing. I do believe some wars have been just; most have not, and war, by its nature, is so terrible, it should always be considered as a last resort.

It was considered a last resort, with Congressional approval. We got bad info from your friends the French (imagine that).

I agree. Lets give the Saudis the finger so you can ride your bike then ext time you want to visit grandma in NYC.

OK to rid Milosivich but going after Saddam was different?

You are right; I would not like to live anywhere else. I have been to Europe, and even parts of Africa, and while I found much to like about the countries I visited, I value the life I have had in America. What we have accomplished in terms of gender equality, homsexual rights, civil rights, how we managed to conquer our discriminatory practices against Jews and non-white, non-European, non-Protestest immigrants, how so many people of so many different religions and cultures can co-exist here in relative peace, the stance we took in Bosnia, against Milosevic, these are things I am proud of, and consider them magnificent achievements. However, there is plenty we have done, starting with slavery and the genocide of Indians, our support for despots like Montt and Somoza, for which we should be criticized. That is the difference between jingoism and patriotism. A jingoist would say America was ALWAYS right, and that it should attack Iran, even if such a war would cost the lives of tens of millions, a patriot would admit that America is not perfect, and that we can afford to learn from our mistakes.

Maybe Michael Moore is not stupid, really; but neither is George Bush, Dan Quayle, or Sarah Palin....That's the wrap they get constantly from Hollywood that the public will in time buy into if hammered constantly by the mainstreem press.
They show is funny as much as SNL...

Jarrod,

Your the typical leftist that would rather see this country apologize to the world for being free and a Superpower. It is ironic that we doi not need to apologize for LEFTISTS like yourself. I am a Viet Nam Vet and you are the typical leftest interested in your opinion only. You are the type that spat on us returning from a War that the politicians lost.

You cannot relate to folks like Sarah Palin because you were probably handed everything in life and don't know what work or struggle means.

If I were you I would move to Cuba or even better maybe Bolivia, its a nice place this time of year. Maybe visit their prisons (they might like some of you).

An Coulter would run circles around your ideology (probably the reeason for lashing out at her). Unfortunately you cannot understand honor, courage, patriotiusm, and other characteristics foreign to leftists. Visit Arlington sometime and appreciate the sacrifice for you Sweet Lib Ass.

Why does America need to be a superpower? I do believe that we should be a moral leader, intervening in places like Darfur or Myanmar, or at least doing what we can to make our contempt for such grotesque human rights violations known. And we should speak out about stuff like genital mutilation, child sex slavery, and donate money to victims of natural disasters, like we did with the tsunami in Asia. But to wage an illegal war in Iraq, against someone who was not a threat to us, whom we told lies about when we could not come up with a valid pretext, and then waging war unconstitutionally; I do have a problem with that. Coulter supports it. She also supports the mass conversion of Muslims to Christianity. Many modern conservatives support wiretapping, the Patriot Act, racial profiling of Arabs, the expansion of government power so as to intrude into the lives of citizens at any moment. She also said that women should not be allowed to vote, and that firebombing Germany cities was one of the most effective ways to fight WWII, even though it claimed hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. If those are the cornerstones of her ideology, then I want no part of it. I sometimes think our military is used irresponsibly, and that out soldiers sometimes do abominable things, for which they are not always held accountable.
Don
Oct 5, 2008 7:23 PM

Muslims suport mass conversion to Islam, is that worth noting? Patriot Act and tapping is the ONLY way to track criminals (effectively) why is that so hard to understand? Soldiers do make errors, juust like you do, thats just the way war is.

You criticize the Iraqi invasion (where mutilation etc. was condoned) but you want us to go to Darfur to fix the same thing? The heighth of Hippocrisy.
Jarrod
Oct 5, 2008 8:11 PM

Muslims may support mass conversion to Islam, which would make them worthy of condemnation, much like Ms. Coulter. I am saying that both are equally ridiculous, and representative of a supremacist attitude. Do you favor one over the other? We do not have to go to war with Sudan to stop the butchery in Darfur. Yes, Saddam was evil; I have never said he was not. He had torture chambers and rape rooms. Intervention does not have to mean full-scale war; a war with Sudan would inevitably claim countless civilian lives, is there such a thing as acceptable losses, when dealing with human life? Soldiers do make mistakes, but that argument can only go so far. Soldiers, like cops, should be able to handle themselves under stress and enormous pressure better than ordinary folks, because these are not jobs or duties that just anyone can perform.

Maybe we can tell everyone in Africa to stop killing each other in their various civil wars. That should an immediate effect. But what if they don't do what we ask? Oh, wouldn't it be terrible to profile Muslims just because they're the only group lately that hijacks airplanes and crashes them into buildings? That would look like we're picking on the poor terrorists that have dedicated their lives to kill anyone that isn't a Muslim. It's dangerous and idiotic to think that they won't be back to try to kill many more of us here at home. I just hope that they start at the Hollywood award parties and San Fransisco bath houses. This behavior they find especially offensive. That will give me more time to set up my defenses so I can kill them before they kill me. Now that Obama ordered Gitmo closed, maybe they'll be a lot closer, maybe even within range for a 30.06. And I'll just have to tell NObama he can't have my guns. I need them to protect my family and country from ALL enemies, both foreign and domestic. You liberals are ignorant fools. Baaaaaaaaaa.

Lisa,

We agree on your last 2 out of 3 points. I'm more concerned about the open border to the South. The chicks are cute north of the border, at least the ones that shave their legs, so I don't have as much a problem. We have been protecting your sweet Lib arse for a long.

What are you doing to fix the border problem.

I belong to the MCDC who actively assists the Border Patrol and reports suspected illegals. Even if it profiles. I am profiled as an Anglo daily.

As for your 3rd point, I am a military veteran and prefer the Stars and Stripes free to fly on a flagpole.

My wife is from Canada and we go there every 1-2 years to visit her family. After being here for 15 years, she can really see the liberal bias from your socialist media and citizens, including her family and friends. That illustrates a major difference between you and us. We know firsthand what it's actually like both in the US and Canada. You get your information from the liberal media that is controlled by socialists on both sides of the border. She has worked health care there and here. There you wait until your condition is terminal and they try to make you comfortable until you die. Here they treat you to make you live longer. That way the capitalists can make more money because you live longer. There is no incentive to make anyone live longer in your socialist system. I always worried about our southern border much more than the northern, but with whackjobs like you, I may have to reconsider.

A liberal slamming a conservative movie! What a surprise.
By the way, when Mike Moore endorsed government controlled health care he in affect endorsed communism and by extension Fidel Castro.
It is wrong to take money from the person and give to another for any reason; our own government is no exception of course.
If you want good health care then pay a good doctor what he is worth.

J

It's obvious that Jarrod will vote for the Socialist Obama. I will definately go see this movie after reading this loser's review. His hero, Michael Moore is full of crap. If you want socialized medicine like Canada and England has, you are either stupid or ignorant, if not both. In Canada it takes weeks for an MRI, 10-14 months to get a mammogram (even though their mother died from breast cancer), 1.5 years (and still waiting) to see a cardiologist. These are facts. My wife is from Canada and her family continues to tell us of the crappy lack of care there.
Jarrod
Oct 5, 2008 7:01 PM

Michael Moore is not my hero (and I have a fairly long list of heroes) and I think it would be impossible to have universal health care here, like in Sweden, for instance, since we have so many more people. I don't know how to make health care affordable to everyone, maybe that is not possible, either, meaning that the poor would be deprived of adequate medical care, since good medical care costs so much money. I am going to vote for Obama; I might have voted for the John McCain of 15-20 years ago, but not the McCain I see now, with his disturbingly religious running mate, and how similar his worldview is to Bush's. Of course, just about anybody would be better than Bush, who is the worst president we have ever had. Even Harding and Grant look competent by comparison.
J
Jan 24, 2009 4:45 AM

First of all the poor are not deprived of health care. They go to county hospitals and clinics for "free" care. Actually, it's not free. The taxpayers pay for it. That accounts for quite a few billion dollars that California is short this year. Illegal aliens cost our state well over $20 billion per year. One out of 8 in the State prison is an illegal, which costs almost $1 billion. I do agree that McCain is a joke, as do most voters. That's why Obama funneled so much of his illegal contributions to his campaign. He wanted McCain to get the nomination because he would be easier to beat. Sorry to disappoint you on the worst president. It wasn't Bush. Since I started voting in 1976 Carter has been by far the worst. He was totally incompetent. We had runaway inflation, high interest rates, high unemployment, and our citizens were held hostage in Iran for almost one and one-half years. I hate to say it, but I actually voted for him, mainly because Ford pardoned Nixon. FDR is what made the depression in the US a "great" depression. The rest of the world recovered years before we did. This is the same direction Obama said he will take us. Let's hope it was just campaigning BS. I was actually a registered Democrat for 20 years until I saw their real agenda. Now I'm an independent. I vote for individuals because don't buy the crap that any party is selling.

Don

Cute, but circular in your argument. The world will criticize us for our sins. I suppose you are judge and jury (the very thing you protest). America does a lot of good, do you acclaim that? I've been overseas and seen the good displayed by America (bags of flour and spaghetti machines) in orphanages in the most unlikely places. You do not criticize the America I know to our enemies (this is embolding). To me, sure but to the world, YOUR WRONG.

Sure we make mistakes but as I experienced (Jane Fonda to wit) people like you who to our enemies and validate the criticisms in their very presence. They are the types responsible for incalculable deaths and beatings.

What you do not understand is that the enemies we have want people like you for their propaganda and you always produce.

Iraq was sympathetic to the very terrorists that attacked America. That is a fact! Many currently identified were medically treated and harbored in Iraq. Getting your news fron CNN or PMSNBC?

Islam is a violent religion. Muhammed was a warrior and intolerant of any other religion or following. Maybe you could donate your head to hang from a bridge in Baghdad to show your sympathy to Al Queda.

Back to the movie folks this fool is brainwashed.

You seem to know a lot about the closet.
Jarrod
Oct 5, 2008 8:01 PM

I agree that Islam is a violent religion, but so too is Christianity. Look at what Protestants and Catholics have done to each other in Ireland, not quite so different from what Sunnis and Shi'ites do to each other in Iraq. Muhammad was also likely a pedophile, since he supposedly married a girl who was about 12 or 13. Al-Qaeda had no real power in Iraq; Bin Laden wants to control the Muslim world; you think Saddam would have allowed a rival of that magnitude in his country? Al-Qaeda does want to kill Christians, Jews, and probably Shi'ites, but if we want to fight this evil network, why not focus on where they are, like Pakistan and Afghanistan, both of which have been ignored because of all of the focus we have put on Iraq. We supported Saddam when he invaded Iran.
