A mirage of contentment
Favorite Movie Quote: "we're gong to be ok? aren't we?"
Sam Mendes latest effort peels back the seal of suburban life and marriage during the 1950s. It's a painful, angry, and subversive piece of movie brilliance. Winslet and DiCaprio play the role of husband and wife in a perfect neighborhood with perfect neighbors. They have two wonderful children, a beautiful home, and seemingly no problems---on the outside. The inner turmoil of living a wasted life; an ordinary life bleeds through the bandage of their pretense. The only hope they have of rekindling their dying spirit is to move to Paris, away from the confines of the "American Dream".
Revolutionary Road isn't a joyful, happy film some viewers will come to expect. Just because Kate and Leo re-team for another go, doesn't call for a sweet and tender love story. It does, however, call for two of the best performances of the year. Kate is strong willed, adventurous, yet cowardly and naive. DiCaprio isn't as angry as he is careless and stuck into becoming every other salesman at the office he works in. And certainly the blame can't be placed on one particular person for why things have turned out the way they have. Each equally deals the amount of damage required to destroy the image they so desperately want to keep---or become.
Despite how tragic the picture is, Revolutionary Road is great film making. It doesn't shy away from its tough subject matter and it doesn't ask its audience to forgive its bluntness. To do so would tarnish the message that you can have it all, and still have absolutely nothing.
