Movie Review by Zara
June 13th, 2009

The draw to the first SAW movie was that it came at an unexpected lull in original horror films, filling a void with a movie to argue over whether it was good or just well-timed. For me, I wasn't all that interested in the movie when it was released, watching it on a lark when it came out on DVD. That's when SAW became the movie franchise series for me in the horror genre. See, I hadn't grown up with horror movies like my friends had. My parents weren't into them (the worst "horror" I saw was in sci-fi movies, my dad's choice) and they didn't mind me hearing bad language or sexual suggestion, but were opposed to unnecessary violence. So my horror movie knowledge came late in life.

While they're not always great (I liked the first movie, was OK with the second one, ended up liking the third a lot, didn't like the fourth all that much and this movie was meh for me), they are the series that I have diligently watched all of. I plan on taking in the FRIDAY THE 13th movies soon, as a learning curve to the remakes that keep coming out now. But for the most part, I feel somewhat attached to the SAW movies, for the better or worse, depending on if you like them or not.

This version strayed from the concept of how many crazy inventive traps could be come up with and instead focused on the problem of figuring out how to transfer over the series from the original killer to the person who was going to carry on the mayhem. This felt forced as they squeezed in some torture devices and people who needed to learn Jigsaw's "life lessons" while carrying on a background story of the cop who was behind everything that Jigsaw couldn't carry out physically.

Still, I can't discount that the movie held my attention. Moreso than the previous installment did, which mainly frustrated and annoyed me. Here's to seeing what they come up with later this year for the 6th movie.

This franchise should have never gone further than the first movie.
