Movie Review by Zara
December 6th, 2008

Oy. Alpha knows that I love him, which is why I treated him to a viewing of this film even though I had no real desire to see it. This is the third time that they've tried to make a Punisher franchise take off, recasting and still getting everything wrong. I didn't want to see it going into it and watching it just reaffirmed that I was right. But a good girlfriend goes to see crap in exchange for the same in return later down the road. Normally we're good on wanting to see (or not see) the same things, but comic book movies are his fly strip of life.

The movie is loud, angry, blood-filled and has poor casting, poor acting (Ray Stevenson is blank and mechanical, leaving the character of Castle completely void of any empathy you might have for him) and poor choice of dialog. It does succeed on one level that I will grudgingly give it credit for. The art direction of the movie is at times vividly lit and colored, while at the same time striking in its lack of sheen. It literally looks like the shiny pages of a new graphic novel - colorful but reflecting the light so that it comes off slightly muted at the same time and captures the mood of the piece.

But the acting, the writing... the loud and directionless plot which seems to just want to be bloody and stupid (but not the merciful kind of stupid where it recognizes and embraces the fact that it's stupid)... it's all too bad to ignore. This is by all means and measures a failure at the miserable attempt to make The Punisher the next Iron Man. Let Frank Castle die in the cinema. It's just his time.

It kills me that they can't get this right.
