Much better than it should have been and deceptively different than its marketing, this is a fairly innocuous Disney flick featuring animals, much like the older Disney movies featuring animals. It aims to be (and will most likely hit that mark) the big dog of the Chihuahua set and it definitely has the right grasp on the audience - those who are just lovers of the breed and little kids who love that the dog is small.
While in the early trailers it was proposed that George Lopez was going to be the more important dog, that doesn't turn out to be the case. The film focuses more on the Beverly Hills Chihuahua in question, a pampered little white pooch named Chloe and voiced by Drew Barrymore. When her owner asks her inept and irresponsible niece to watch over the dog while on a business trip, of course the young woman loses her in Mexico.
While there, Chloe is picked up to be bait in a dog fighting ring and ends up rescued by a German Shepard voiced by Andy Garcia. Together, along with a lot of famous Mexican actors and performers, those two actors make what could have been slightly more predictable a little bit less than. Garcia is particularly effective at giving a mature voice to the former police dog, something that helps to balance out the goofiness of the other characters and situations.
I especially liked that they got Placido Domingo to do the voice of the main Chihuahua, Monty (short for Montezuma), who rescues the two leads from mountain lions. Monty is a long-haired Chihuahua who has gathered many of the country's breed to one place in which they have a quite funny scene talking about taking back their power and former heroism and dismissing having become known primarily as a lap dog.
Overall, if you've got to take your kid to go watch this movie, it's not all that painful to sit through. And for a family movie, that's the most important thing to me.
