Movie Review by E September 18th, 2008

Despite a respectable $60 million budget, Righteous Kill works like a film made on the cheap, a B movie masquerading as an A production. The combination of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino sounds intriguing, the two teaming up for the first time since Heat (1995), but their latest collaboration results in one of the dullest exercises in the crime thriller genre in recent memory, complete with a twist ending you'll see coming a mile away.
There's no need to elaborate on the plot much for those familiar with the Dirty Harry films. One gets the feeling writer Russell Gewirtz surmised that the combination of various elements from the famed Eastwood films would add up to a credible modern thriller. Unfortunately the end product only confirms the superiority of the Dirty Harry films, with esteemed thespians De Niro and Pacino abandoned by a hackneyed script. Without anything of substance in writing to allow the leads to embody their characters, the two are left to spit out obscenities and overindulge in unconvincing tough guy expressions. I hate to sound crude, but let's face it, at this point these guys look a little weathered for this type of film. De Niro even seems a bit disinterested at times, relying on his patented "what the hell is going on?" look all too often.
Perhaps most unforgivably, the film's conclusion forces Al Pacino's character to behave implausibly for no other reason than it's time for the movie to end. If there were a real Dirty Harry, the producers behind Righteous Kill would be in some serious trouble.
