Disaster Movie (2008)

Movie Review by Jarrod August 31st, 2008

'Disaster Movie' is the worst film of the year so far. Worse that Meet the Spartans and The Hottie and the Nottie. Worse than both of those combined. You may think I am exaggerating, but believe me I am not; never have I NOT recommended something so strongly. The writing-directing team of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer is quickly approaching Uwe Boll levels of cinematic awfulness; they cannot come up with a single joke or gag that works, and some scenes are so jaw-droppingly bad and humorless, you might forget that this is supposed to be a comedy. The Seltzer-Friedberg duo has been responsible for Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, and Date Movie, the last of which is probably their best, though it is has poor competition, but did benefit from the presence o\f Alyson Hannagan. Date Movie was also the most focused of their features, it did not veer as wildly off course and become such an aimless, meaningless mess as the others.
'Disaster Movie' is, as the title would suggest, a parody of flicks involving natural disasters, like earthquakes and floods, maybe even meteors falling from space, but this only takes up a few minutes of its running time; the vast majority of the film is spent spoofing celebrities and pop culture trends, as well as big box office hits, like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, with Tony Cox as Indy. Who all does it poke fun at? There's boozy British singer Amy Winehouse, Miley Cyrus (better known by her stage name Hannah Montana), the Amy Adams character from Enchanted, Dr. Phil, the cast of High School Musical, Jessica Simpson, Flava-Flav, Michael Jackson, Michael Cera, and Justin Timberlake. It tosses out references to The Dark Knight, Hellboy, Prince Caspian, Speed Racer, Hancock, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man.
Alvin and the Chipmunks (portrayed as terribly artificial puppets) turn into vicious, rabid creatures that attack any human in sight. The main character is Will (Matt Lanter, voice of Anakin in Star Wars: The Clone Wars), who goes on a Cloverfield-inspired adventure to save his trapped girlfriend Amy (Vanessa Minnillo). In his entourage are Calvin (G Thang), the token black guy, and Juney (Crista Flanagan), an obvious send-up of Ellen Page in Juno, minus the wit and intelligence. Mad TV regular Ike Barinholtz probably has the most roles to play, all with equal ineptitude. Kim Kardashian makes her debut, and needles to say, was more entertaining in that leaked sex tape she made with Brandy's brother Ray J. I will say that the Justin Timberlake and Michael Cera impersonators (Jonas Neal and Devin Crittenden, respectively) do bear striking resemblances to their subjects, and Austrian actor Roland Kickinger could probably make a good Hulk, if given half a chance (he certainly has the physique, just paint him green).
These are flimsy and insincere compliments. It has no positive qualities to speak of, and is not in the least bit funny. It would be sad to see it at the top of weekend box-office chart, but I have a feeling it will end up there, if audiences are desperate and/or retarded. No wonder there were no advance screenings; a miserable embarrassment for all involved.
