I can't say that I have the stomach for much horror at the current moment, mainly because those getting the most money to get made are high volume remakes and just sh*tty storyline movies overall. Especially the ones that are remakes which strive for the PG13 label so that they can get in the most brain dead little tweens. That alone is horror to me, thinking about all those stupid kids being raised with zero imagination.
OTIS borrow a lot from different movies and even just simple aspects that would get used on an episode of "Law & Order: SVU" but it's successful because you get the instant feeling as if there were no producers involved in the making of the flick. Or if there were, everything that was suggested to them they happily put their stamp of approval on without a care. OTIS is not a movie that could have been mass marketed. And it's not some DTD (direct to DVD) mess where the people making it believe that they're more important than they really are.
It's just a story of a miserable slob of a cretin who kidnaps teenage girls, keeps them hostage in his garage where there are several "sets" constructed for him to carry out his fantasies and then murders them and hacks them up if things go wrong. It is violent, to be sure, but at the same time, there is a humour to it which is blacker than a midnight sky.
I ended up loving the movie for Illeana Douglas, who as the mother of the last girl kidnapped, doesn't think along the same sad sack lines as most parents of victims. Daniel Stern as her husband is a nice twist and even Ashley Johnson (who played "Crissy" on "Growing Pains" when she was wee) is a typical blonde who doesn't just go along with the torture in a manner that you would expect. Her strength is interestingly inspiring.
Really good from the indie, this ain't your average horror flick, perspective. It has its problems, but overall you know you're getting something that didn't have its toes and fingers cut off, blended into a smoothie and then shoved down your throat.
