Movie Review by Zara August 18th, 2008

There are portions in this movie which are so funny, you'll laugh so hard that you'll look like Simple Jack. There are even a couple of moments where you'll clap when you laugh because they get it so right.
By "it," I'm referring to mocking Hollywood, something that's been done before several times over. The hard part to look past in TROPIC THUNDER is that some of the very sh*t that they make fun of, they're guilty of committing in even getting this movie made. TT isn't a low budget, artsy flick with lesser known actors. The very fact that Tom Cruise has pretty much made it clear that he chose to have a co-starring role in the movie (don't call it a cameo - he gets too much screen time to have it equal up to that) in order to do damage control on his rapidly fading star is evidence enough.
And don't look to the two biggest comedians, Stiller or Black, to be where you get the most laughs from. The man whom everyone wanted to see redeem himself didn't just earn that with the smash hit IRON MAN earlier this summer, he slams home how to properly make fun of oneself with his line about getting into character as Neil Armstrong. Robert Downey Jr is most definitely THE MAN.
I also find it hard to accept that most reviews overlook or down play the additions of Brandon T. Jackson and Jay Baruchel in the supporting roles as the rapper-turned-actor and the naive small role actor who is the only one who does his research or even reads the script. Baruchel and Jackson add a balance to the showboating of the other actors, much like they would have if TT were an actual picture and we were living in its universe.
Overall, I liked the movie. But its inconsistencies are difficult to look past. When the movie is working, it's like being on a high. When it's not, you feel these empty lows, providing an overall bi-polar feeling which isn't the fun kind.
