Movie Review by Zara

Favorite Movie Quote: "Not even a little excited?"

I'm pushing myself to rate this higher than I think I would've if not romantically attached to a comic book geek. Knowing and understanding more about how they made the movie and its correlations to both the comic book and the television show (which I watched and LOVED as a kid, seeing Lou in this was still my favorite part) helps me to like it more overall.

First off... Liv Tyler is a much better Betty Ross than Jennifer Connelly was. (You knew the comparisons between this film and Ang Lee's 2003 version, HULK, were going to be made.) She is soft and yet not a pushover. In fact, if I can emphasize anything about her performance in the movie, it's that she genuinely seemed like the teacher/scholar that she was supposed to be playing, not just some girlfriend of the tortured Bruce Banner.

Second off, the actors in general are better as a whole than for the other version. While Norton was quite subdued in his performance, (underwhelming is a great word for it, considering how great I've seen him be in other films) there is some fantastic stuff from Tim Roth (as Abomination), Tim Blake Nelson (Mr. Blue aka the professor who becomes "The Leader" from S.H.I.E.L.D. Again, I wouldn't have known this stuff without my comic book boy) and William Hurt as General Ross (while Sam Elliot was my favorite from Ang Lee's version, Hurt is overall the better of the two in conjunction with the movie as a whole).

Third... the special effects, from a purely visual stand point are great. The Hulk looks far more believable than any other version I've seen and they really get in some of the signature moves of the character as well (although the CGI version looks NOTHING like Norton). There is some good humour in it (not being able to have sex with Betty because he doesn't want his heart rate to go up too much is great) even though the movie as a whole is pretty sullen.

The portions of the movie that were explained to me so that I had a better appreciation of it included the Alpha Male pointing out that some of the score used was from the original TV show (I wouldn't have been able to place it since it was so long since I watched the show) as well as the subtle hints in the movie to other Marvel characters throughout.

The movie was a mixture of being more faithful to the comic book while still maintaining the faithful nature to the television show that so many people liked. (When Bruce is first turned into the Hulk, he is seen strapped to a table/chair like in the TV show.) I imagine that a great deal of the reason why they haven't been able to bring Wonder Woman to the big screen is that despite the fact that the Linda Carter show was so cheesy, people remember and identify the character with that. It's a great obstacle for this movie as well, especially in light of the fact that it was only 5 years ago that the other Hulk movie was released and that people were so overwhelmingly disappointed with it.

So as an overall note, I will say this: THE INCREDIBLE HULK is rather entertaining. I would recommend it more to adults than children (the amount of violence and gunplay in it is too much for small children, and it includes a scene which suggests that a dog has been killed, which would be traumatizing for most kids) and tell you to just lean back and enjoy the mostly harmless and brainless fun of it.
