Movie Review by Jarrod
May 12th, 2008

'What Happens in Vegas' is a stupid and painfully unfunny comedy, but then I never enjoy any movie with Ashton Kutcher in it. I am willing to believe that Kutcher could act his way out of a paper bag, but I have not seen him do it; about the only film that has required any acting ability on his part was The Butterfly Effect, and even that did not turn out so well. Cameron Diaz was a perky, radiant presence in There's Something About Mary, and a delight in Shrek, but, like Kutcher, she is never expected to be serious; the only exception in her case was Gangs of New York, where she was sorely outmatched by Leo DiCaprio and especially Daniel Day-Lewis. The two of them are not compatible as a couple; Diaz is far too pretty for Kutcher, but then so too is Demi Moore. Diaz is Joy McNally, a New York businesswoman dumped by her boyfriend. Kutcher is Jack Fuller, who loses his job. They both head off to Vegas to let off some steam, in the company of their respective best friends, Tipper (Lake Bell) and Hater (Rob Corddry). There, they meet, get drunk, and wake up in bed the next morning as husband and wife. They plan on getting a quick annulment, which would be easy enough to do, but that is until Jack wins a $3million jackpot at the slot machines, and since he used one of Joy's quarters, she expects to get half, but they cannot reach an agreement, so they end up in court, where the presiding judge (Dennis Miller) issues them an odd sentence; they are to remain married for six months, after which time they will be able to split the winnings evenly.

Now, they should have just split the money from the beginning and gone their separate ways, but this would have made too much sense; Joy and Jack are not the sharpest tools in the drawer. What happens when two people who intensely dislike one another are forced to live together for an extended period of time? The results are predictable. But, Jack's underlying sweetness emerges at an unexpected moment, Joy grows fonder of him and by the end of the whole thing, they have put aside their differences and could potentially consider a long-term relationship. I mentioned that Kutcher and Diaz have no chemistry whatsoever; he was more convincingly matched with Brittany Murphy in that honeymoon debacle Just Married. The only thing that made me chuckle was Miller, whose appearance was unexpected, but rewarding. Queen Latifah is wasted as Dr. Twitchell, the marriage counselor they must see as stipulated by the rules of their sentence.
