Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

The Ladies Rule
Favorite Movie Quote: "Let me just say that if God was a city planner he would not put a playground next to a sewage system!"
Time and time again, Judd Apatow et al have been criticized for making sexist films or for not representing women in a positive light in their movies. 'Knocked Up' was a step away from that mentality, but 'Marshall' is a giant leap.
Jason Segal (genius on CBS's best show 'How I Met Your Mother') wrote and stars in this story that cuts a bit close to his relationship with Linda Cardellini (NBC's 'ER'). Segal plays a struggling composer whose long-time girlfriend, a TV celeb, dumps him for a ridiculous rocker. Segal takes off to Hawaii to cope, but alas his former paramour is there alongside her pretentiously obtuse lover, and Segal must cope.
Segal himself is a slightly blotchy classic leading man. In Tom Hanks fashion, he is not the stunning man candy, but the buddy, the good guy. Segal has perfected that type of character with his TV work on 'Freaks and Geeks' and 'Mother', always being put-upon but emerging victorious in the end. He is insanely likable.
Kristen Bell steps away from 'Veronica Mars' by playing the easily unlikable title character as a real person. She gives Sarah Marshall a struggle and we can relate. When he finally explains herself to Segal, we can really understand where she is coming from, and Bell makes it no longer easy to feel so sorry for her ex.
However the real stand out of this film for me is Mila Kunis as Segal's love interest at the resort. To make myself clear, I always thought Kunis was the least talented cast member of 'The 70's Show', I thought she was lucky to be on 'Family Guy' and that she really had no discernible acting skills. To say she has proven me wrong is to say it lightly. She simply glows throughout this film, she ultimately becomes the most relatable character in the whole movie. She is the ideal girl without being unattainable.
This movie is funny, but it is not a flat out comedy, there are certainly dramatic moments. In the end, this is a dissection of the fall and rise of love in a modern context. I was impressed with the performances, the script, the Segal, but above all, the women.
