I guess this movie just brought up memories in me, the ones of watching schlocky '70's Kung-Fu movies on lazy Sunday afternoons, but just revamped with brighter colors and some CGI action. I don't know. What I can tell you is that the movie was entertaining and gets a little more credit for captivating my daughter so much. She was completely immersed in the film, happy to see all those bright colors and stunts, even if mixed with a silly story. (Hey, all those old movies had worse stories, so I can't blame her.)
The key interest here was in watching Jackie Chan and Jet Li fight one another in the film, or as my AlphaMale put it... it was like watching Batman and Captain America fight one another. They each could have blocked one another's punches and kept going all night, but put that aside because there were better things to do.
Michael Angarano, best known for playing the son of Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston in SKY HIGH, is self-effacing and harmless enough to carry off this movie. He knows that he's not the star of the show and allows the veteran actors to do their thing without getting in their way. But he doesn't completely fade into the background in some wimpy character form.
My biggest complaint with the film is that the scenes in the modern day world are unnecessarily violent. I understand that a catalyst was needed to set off the simplistic and silly story, but I'm sure that it didn't require the heavy hand that was used.
Overall, my Midget liked it and I thought the Kung Fu scenes were cool. So that's that.
