Movie Review by Misty
April 18th, 2008

I just need to cut here...

Favorite Movie Quote: "Eric: [sarcastically] Well, thank God we cut his legs off."

This movie surprised me. It wasn't at all what I was thinking it would be (by it, I mean the horrible thing that kills people). I thought for sure it would be some monsters...similar to the things on that movie with Vin Diesel as Riddick...the things that fly and only come when it's dark and stuff...I was thinking that would be the thing to kill the people in this flick.

Boy was I wrong.

I really enjoyed this flick and just now found out it was originally a book. I think that fact that the author of the book did the writing for the movie helped it a lot, but even though I haven't read the book I still think it will be better for some reason.

This story of 4 college students in Mexico on vacation when they suddenly meet up with a stranger that takes them to old Mayan ruins to find his brother. That should have been their first clue to stay at the beach...the fact that this strangers brother hadn't returned yet. They set out on a trail that's been deliberately hidden and end up stuck on a big, old, Mayan structure(I'm not sure what they're exactly called, but they're like the Mayan version of a pyramid I guess.) covered in vines. They first realize somethings wrong when they meet up with the Mayan guys pointing bows and arrows and guns at them.

It only gets worse from here and some parts of really graphic (which was so COOL to me) and bloody. If you can't hang with blood and stuff like that hide your eyes, because it gets pretty gross. That was my favorite part of the whole flick, actually.

The end surprised me...I kept waiting for something else, but all I got was the credits (btw: did I see Ben Stiller in the credits as an executive producer or something? Or am I trippin'?). I got the feeling that it ended too soon and there could've been a lot more content. I would have liked to see them all venture down the hole at the top and explore a little more before being killed. Other than that I really liked it. Give it look-see before it gets to DVD or watch it as soon as it hits DVD if you wish, but give it chance. You might be surprised.

Yeah, Stiller was a producer for it. He was a big fan of the book, which I think is also why the screenplay ended up being done by the author as well.

The legs quote is a great one.

I just wish it had been the blonde one to get away. Jena Malone annoys me.

Yeah, me too...but the blonde did play the crazy bit pretty good. Jena Malone annoys me too! ;)

Youre going to visit a Mayan temple obviously buried in some kind of forest or jungle terrain and you wear white freakin pants and flip flops. These girls were dimwitted.

The flowers were cool.

I was thinking that too! These dumb girls with their flip flops...after they already had discussed it and said there would be some hiking involved...they give girls a bad name...lol.

The flowers were freaky, but very cool. :)
