This is a really great mock-u-mentary about the world of pro-poker players, hitting upon every personality that you might have caught if you've watched the "sport" be televised.
The actors in the movie are all top-notch, not a single bad performance in the movie. I always like to point out that I love Ray Romano when he's being a comedian (which, I know he's being an actor in this, but he comes off like more of a comedian, and it's great) even if his TV show was sucky.
Cheryl Hines is another person who I didn't like on a television show (she was Larry David's wife on "Curb Your Enthusiasm") but I've gained a great deal of respect for her through watching her in films. She's particularly interesting here.
But my mine man, Chris Parnell, once again steals the show. He's one of the funniest and seriously underrated actors out there today. Most people are going to remember him from his many years on SNL (great trivia fact: he's the only player from the show who was fired by Lorne Michaels, only to be rehired 2 years later) but his quality as an actor is something that should be noted.
He takes on the role of the poker player who is weird, overly obsessed with the mathematics of the game and still lives with his mom. In other words, he gives a PITCH PERFECT performance of a person with Asperger's Autism. From the obsessive nature in which he competes, to having to have things a specific way all the time to never looking anyone in the eye but at the same time berating them for their weaknesses, I LOVED him in this. Most people who aren't familiar with autism aren't going to pick up on it, but I would be genuinely surprised if he didn't base his performance on an autistic. It's funny and not mocking, a perfect blend of understanding of the nuances of this type of person.
This movie will surprise you in its funniness, even if you're not familiar with the competitive world of poker. Well worth the watch.
