Movie Review by Chris September 11th, 2008

Donnas senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life, one of magic, beauty, and love. Surrounded by her best friends, she should be safe from the horrors of her past. But when the night turns from magic to murder there is only one man who could be responsible, the man she thought was gone forever. Now, Donna and her friends must find a way to escape the sadistic rampage of an obsessed killer, and survive their Prom Night.
'Prom Night' is yet another clumsy remake based off of a 1980 film of the same name starring Jamie Lee Curtis. Director Nelson McCormick comes from a history of TV episodes from shows like ER, Prison Break and even a few episodes from the mighty series '24'. He does show his MTV editing talent with all the tight editing, speeding up the shot or shaking the camera to the point where we lost complete focus on the action. Instead of even trying to make the film scary in one way or another they just mainly focused on creating barely 90 minutes of senseless terror, but there was no terror so it was just completely senseless. The completely horrible script written by JS Cardone, the writer of the oh so horrible Covenant, creates another feeble attempt at a good script. Brittany Snows and Johnathon Schaech's performance couldve been a little better but they got the job done and got paid so it all works out.
Johnathon Schaech plays the perfect sexual stalker, Richard Fenton. The thing about Fenton is that he used to be a teacher of Donna and I dont know what happened but he just instantly became obsessed with her, taking unknown photographs and coming up with dirty and sexual fantasies about him and her if they were together. A few years before the movie takes place we see that while Donna was arriving home one night he murders her father, mother and her brother. So now shes on medication for nightmares and all that not so nice stuff. Johnathon does fairly well here, though there is barely any dialogue when it comes to his part his actions and stuff were done really nicely and he kind of fit into that category of stalkers/sexual murderers.
Brittany Snow has quite a history with some direct to video stuff and a few other more popular things but her performance lacks some of the more important things when it comes to playing as Donna. Donna is scarred by the memories of what happened to her family and what she saw that night, but over the 3 or 4 years since it happened she improved a lot in getting her life back together and just having a good time. She lives with her nice aunt and uncle who really care about her so everything is kind of working out with her. She is extremely excited about Prom and wants everything to go smooth between all her friends and her boyfriend. Some emotion was required from Brit's performance but this is where she seemed to lack. It just seemed like she didnt care and never really displayed any hardcore emotion which I wouldve liked to see come from her.
'Prom Night' becomes really messy when it comes to the action scenes and all the deaths, now I dont mean messy like bloody but what we see becomes distorted and somewhat annoying. With his history of TV shows I kind of understand where he is coming from with his approach but when you break out into major film you need to create a balance between what you think looks good and what you think needs some improving. First off, he takes the teenage approach by making the theatrical release PG-13, which is a problem for hardcore horror fans like me. I believe the original film was R but wasnt hardcore violent, I mean we dont even have any sex or nudity in this bad boy. I did see the Unrated dvd which supposedly has some extra gore but there was none at all, which really dissapointed me.
'Prom Night' is another hit and miss in the horror remake genre, so skip it at all costs.
