The Rocker (2008)

For the majority of the first part of this movie, there's a good amount of physical humour which is actually pulled off well and very humourously by Rainn Wilson. The goofy looking kid that they cast as his nephew and the pinch hitting on the sides by Jane Lynch and Christina Applegate also occur, but for the most part, it is the sad, pathetic never-was rocker that Wilson plays with gusto.
However, it is the young people in the movie who bring it down, constantly whining about how bad they have it when they really don't have it all that bad and Wilson working overtime to try and get them to give up the emo ghost. The small part as a music video director by Demetri Martin helps at the half-way point but by the time that they get to the lame ending, the movie has fully run out of steam.
I liked the nods to heavy metal of the 20 years ago variety that I remember rocking out to when I was in junior high school and thought music mattered as much as Wilson's drummer does. There is some good talent in the elders and even some sharp writing in the script, but I really wish they hadn't needed the young blood to get the story to the stage in the first place. And I actually like Emma Stone, so it pains me to say that she's one of the major problems (along with the whiny Jonas-Brother looking lead singer goober) in the film.
Watch it for Wilson, Applegate and Lynch. Jason Sudeikis is a bizarre but not entirely unwelcome SNL connection. Still, he feels oddly out of place in the film which is sometimes good and sometimes bad depending on the scene.
