Movie Review by Dave
January 5th, 2009

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this movie. It starts out with an excellent premise, an superhero who is an alcoholic jerk. He does the typical, important superhero stuff, fighting crime and saving lives, but the ways he goes about it makes one wonder why. He doesn't seem to care about the people he saves, and they seem to hate him for the ways he does it, but he saves them all the same, then returns to a drunken lonely, life. The story is quite powerful, especially when he starts working to turn his life around, but then the movie starts taking a direction which spoils the character study. I would have preferred to see him continue to confront his personal demons, and perhaps overcome them, without the gimmickry the movie introduces towards the end. I won't give anything away, as I think the movie is still worth seeing, but I think it could have been oh so much more than it was.

I agree about being confused with the movie. I wanted to like it a lot because the trailers were so well made and Smith's character is very interesting at first. But then it just spirals wildly out of control.

Isn't it something how they can take a good idea and ruin it? So sad.
