"You know? Somebody should sue you!"
Favorite Movie Quote: "You know what? You should sue McDonalds, cuz they f**ked you up!"
This is a great example of how a superhero parody comic should look on the big screen. The unfortunate part is that it takes a turn in the "the local screw-up straightens up and flies right" very drastically. I understand the whole time constraint issue, especially after reading about how long it took to get this movie made from scripting to filming, so there was a slight rushed feel to it. It would have been cool to see him revert to some of his bad habits later in the movie and catching himself on it (think HAPPY GILMORE when he was about to throw his golf club and then stops himself.)
80 years ago a man woke up in a hospital room with no memory, but with great and fantastic powers. With no idea of what his name was he took a name after someone asked him to put his "John Hancock" on a medical release form. Hancock chose to use his power for good and became the world's only true superhero. Over time he became disenchanted and lazy with power and began to decline. After a chance encounter with Ray Embrey, a corporate public relations consultant, Hancock decided to clean up his act with the help of Embry. Little did he know he was about to find more than just a new image.
I want to go on the record as saying this is not a "Superman rip-off." I think that is a very short-sighted analysis. If I were to compare Hancock to any character from a comic book I would say Ikaris from the Eternals, especially in light of the new series and story arc (I won't say any more for it may be construed as a spoiler – Considerate Craig.)
Will Smith (I AM LEGEND) as John Hancock was great. He showed how fundamentally flawed even the greatest of us can become if we don't keep ourselves in check. Jason Bateman (STATE OF PLAY) as Ray Embrey was perfect. He had that whole "encouraging yet discouraging" effect. He played the sensitive and understanding guy, but was able to show some serious backbone when the moment needed it. Charlize Theron (THE ROAD) as Mary Embrey didn't look comfortable for the most of the beginning of the movie. You find out later why, but I am not sure how she played it was intentional or just because she didn't like her role. And I hate to say, but there is a scene where she meets up with Hancock secretly and she looks fiiiiiiiine.
I liked this movie, but I can see how some people wanted more from it.
