Speed Racer (2008)

Quick, I must say everything I am thinking!
Favorite Movie Quote: "It's the only thing I know how to do and I gotta do something."
That almost sounds like what the Wachowski brothers said before making this movie (well brother and sister because apparently one has a penchant for cross-dressing, but that is another story.) They have made a good living off overdoing things in movies. They had a good start with the first MATRIX and ruined the franchise in the following two sequels. This time they really got the right idea on how to make this movie look like a seventies anime carton with live actors and actresses. The look was great and there were plenty of references to the show (i.e. the GRX and The Car.) I went into this movie with very low expectations so I was impressed, but I have a feeling if I went into with no expectations I would not have liked it much.
This is a remake of the popular late 70s cartoon Speed Racer, there isn't much to add to that so I won't. They did a good job of recreating it without the annoying, "say everything aloud" dialog.
Now for the bad, the acting was a bit overshadowed by the visual effects but here is my synopsis. Emile Hirsch as Speed Racer was about as believable as he has been in any of his other roles. He looks like he is approaching the role as if it were a parody and never fully looks serious until he pours it on for the final race. John Goodman as Pops Racer Speed's father, Susan Sarandon as Mom Racer Speed's mother, Christina Ricci as Trixie Speed's girlfriend, Richard Roundtree as Ben Burns and Roger Allam as E.P. Arnold Royalton struggled to compete with CGI and did well for what it was worth. Matthew Fox as Racer X wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but that isn't saying much either. The rest of the cast was pretty ambiguous, but everyone put forth a decent effort considering what they were doing.
The bottom line is that I like it only because I was expecting to hate it so much and there was a good amount of respect to the source material.
