Movie Review by Zara
July 5th, 2008

Ultimately, this movie has some very funny moments. But they are the ones that are built up over the course of the film and some of the in between times are a drag. Carrell was a perfect choice as Maxwell and I think he does Don Adams proud, giving a performance which manages to make the character endearing and human at the same time (something that I associate with the role and how Adams pulled it off).

However, the romance between him and Hathaway and in fact their chemistry as a comedic duo altogether is weak and hard to believe. The Rock (yeah, I'm not calling him by his "real" name) is given a thankless and showy role, one that shows the producers were trying to capitalize off his magnetism and reputation. Overall, I was very unhappy with how they handled him.

But, that said, on the upside you also have a great act by Alan Arkin (as the chief of Control) who shows that old men still have some fight in them, and some funny side gigs by Terry Crews and David Koechner as the two Control agents who are the standard jackasses of the corporation with the geeks making some waves as well (Masi Oka, who plays Hiro on "Heroes" is great).

What the movie succeeded at best was managing to appeal to a large demographic. Boomers who remember the show will like it, X'ers who like Carrell will like it, and kids will like the physical (and sometimes predictable) humour in it. But will you love it? Eh... they missed it by THAT much.
