Movie Review by Zara
June 17th, 2009

This was a surprisingly depressing G rated family movie and you know what? I admire it for that. While it eventually succumbs to the classic happy Hollywood ending, I am pleased that the movie didn't water down the serious nature of The Great Depression but instead decided to tackle it at all in the first place.

Considering that the US is in dire financial straits currently, it is a very good comparison to some of the fighting amongst American citizens who were trying to figure out where to place the blame in the population losing their homes in foreclosure or the influx of the homeless - really people who were educated or had jobs prior to getting what we like to call downsizing these days.

I'm still not a fan of Abigail Breslin and this movie didn't help or hurt my opinion of her. While the movie is named after the character that she plays, this is an effort on all actors' parts and there are a slew of incredible actors throughout who make the movie a joy as a whole. With the scene where Wallace Shaw explains to an errant writer at the newspaper he heads that he doesn't have a lisp, it's almost a quiet nod to the heavy lisp that he laid on in THE PRINCESS BRIDE, thus rendering the movie worthwhile overall.
