Movie Review by Jessica Film Junkie

Ballet Overdoes It

Visually, this is undoubtedly one of the great movie musicals. Minnelli does a fantastic job with colour and making each scene feel like a painting. Gene Kelly and Oscar Levant make a splendid odd couple of sorts, the sarcastic musician and the optimistic painter. The film moves along at a great pace until the somewhat bloated final ballet.

The ballet is heralded as the best part of this movie, however it severely detracts from the rest of the plot and ends the movie on a very odd note. Instead of feeling satisfied by the conclusion of the film, we are left scratching out heads trying to connect the dots between fantasy and reality.

In many ways this is one of Minnelli's great achievements, but it is also a classic case of a concept overshadowing emotion.
