Movie Review by Derringer
April 26th, 2009

SHOOT 'EM UP, BABY!

Bang! Bang! She shot me down.
Bang! Bang! I hit the ground.
Bang! Bang! That awful sound.
Bang! Bang! My baby shot me down.

Knowing my Movie-Westerns as I do, I would most definitely rank WINCHESTER '73 right up there as one of the all-time best Western Classics from the 1950's. Like other top-rated Westerns from that marvelous, golden-era (such as THE SEARCHERS and SHANE) WINCHESTER '73 can't be beat for its solid, sharp-shooting entertainment value.

For anyone who knows about rifles - The Winchester '73 was considered by all to be unique. It was unquestionably the perfect rifle. This particular Winchester was a one-in-a-thousand. It was the ultimate rifle. The craftsmanship that went into its making was incomparable. When it came to firearms - The Winchester '73 was a piece of absolutely flawless beauty. No other rifle could compare.

Set in the year 1876 - WINCHESTER '73's finely crafted story starts us out on its adventure from the ideal western-locale of Dodge City, Kansas. From here our story follows the trail of this prized rifle (The Winchester '73) as it changes hands several times throughout the course of the film. For those who hold it (or seek it), The Winchester '73 would somehow adversely affect their lives, usually with fatal consequences.

This flick is a true classic of the Western genre. It's simple, brisk-paced, direct, action-packed, mean, sweaty, suspenseful, and thoroughly entertaining. In other words - WINCHESTER '73 is a perfect Western and I wouldn't want to have it any other way.

WINCHESTER '73 stars JAMES STEWART, SHELLEY WINTERS, and STEPHEN McNALLY.

Bang! Bang! My baby shot me down.
